Dubai trips are easier when you choose transport around your actual route. Use the Metro for journeys that line up with stations, taxis for gaps in the network, and walking for short, comfortable connections. A mixed approach is often more practical than committing to one mode for the whole holiday.
Metro or taxi: which should you choose?
| Option | Useful when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | Your start and destination are convenient to stations | Operating hours, station exits and the final walk |
| Taxi or app-based ride | You have luggage, a late arrival or a destination away from a station | Pickup point, live estimate and traffic |
| Walking | You are exploring one compact area | Heat, crossings, shade and the actual pedestrian route |
| Hotel transfer | You prefer a prearranged arrival | Terminal, meeting point, waiting time and full price |
Using nol for public transport
RTA’s nol system is used across Dubai public transport. The official card guide describes compatibility with the Metro, buses, tram and several marine services. Ticket products and conditions differ, so select a product for the journeys you will actually take rather than assuming every option has identical coverage.
Before travelling, check the current product details, balance requirements and fares with RTA’s nol card information. Use the correct cabin for your ticket and follow station signage. Ask station staff if you are uncertain which ticket or route you need.
Plan the complete Metro journey
A station name is only part of the route. Check the walk from your hotel to the station, any interchange, the correct exit and the final distance to your destination. A long indoor passage still takes time, and a route that looks short on a map may involve road crossings or a detour.
If you have a timed attraction booking, work backwards from its arrival instructions. Allow a margin for ticket purchases, transfers and finding the entrance. Do not use the train journey time alone as your door-to-door estimate.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Use a clearly identified pickup area and check that the vehicle matches your booking where applicable. At large malls and hotels, the pickup point may differ from the entrance you used. Confirm it before calling a car to avoid wasting the driver’s waiting time and your own.
Compare the live estimate for your group with the cost and convenience of public transport. Traffic can change that calculation. Families should confirm child-seat arrangements with the provider in advance rather than assuming a suitable seat will be available on demand.
Arriving at the airport
Check the airport and terminal on your flight booking. Dubai International and Al Maktoum International are different airports. When comparing options, include luggage, the time of arrival, the final hotel connection and the possibility of a flight delay.
If you book a transfer, keep the meeting instructions offline. Confirm how the provider handles delayed flights and when waiting charges begin. Ask the hotel directly whether its shuttle operates on your arrival date and whether it needs a reservation.
Walking and weather
Plan neighbourhood walks as outings in their own right. Check the forecast, carry drinking water and choose a comfortable route. In hotter conditions, shorten outdoor connections and avoid treating a long walk as the default way to save a taxi fare.
A simple daily transport routine
- Group nearby activities using our five-day itinerary.
- Check the route and service information for that day.
- Keep the destination name, entrance and return route available offline.
- Leave a buffer before tickets, pickups and flights.
- Have an alternative for the final connection if the weather or timing changes.
Choose a convenient base
Read our Dubai neighbourhood guide before booking accommodation. For spending decisions, see Dubai on a budget. Transport prices and timetables are not fixed in this guide because they should be checked against your dates and route on the official RTA website.
